Thanks to Spanx, the girdle got an update in 1998 when founder Sara Blakely was “completely horrified by what was out there” while shopping for a body shaper to wear under a pair of form-fitting pants. Ten years later, Atlanta-based Spanx has helped millions of women feel a size smaller and made $350 million in retail sales along the way.
